Today is a new day (From Songkiss'd, March 2009)

I have been trying to make this into a community blog for a while. A blog that everyone can contribute to so that we can all share in this wonderful thing called music. Because music is not just about what's on your iPod.

Music has to be made, written, taught, sung, danced, lived. I guess I still have the dream, but being the owner of this blog and an aspiring music critic, I should be writing blogs on here too. Maybe this will encourage others to contribute. Who knows...I know I don't and I have been trying to find out.

I have several ideas for Songkiss'd. There is a MySpace and today, I made a Twitter account for quick music reviews. I think that this is a dandy idea. You can see updates to the Twitter account at the sidebar.

So as the first post of Songkiss'd, what is this about? Nothing truly musical. Just my thoughts on what I want Songkiss'd to be. I hope that people will start paying attention to this little blog and want to contribute. Of course if you do, this is out of your own free will. For your love of music or as your exposure as a writer. I am just a college student with a vision, so I hope you know there will be no compensation. I wish there could be. Maybe if I can turn this into a full-fledged webzine one day, maybe I could.

Interesting fact: The color white makes sound bounce off walls easily, creating a loud echo.

This is something I have always remembered from my physics of sound class.

According to articles from Billboard.com, The Billboard Women in Music Event "celebrates the most powerful and talented women in the music business and is also held in conjunction with the Women In Music Power Players List issue, which recognizes the top female music executives who are leading the industry with their artistic and business vision."

This year's event will be taking place on this Friday, October 2, 2009 in New York City. Today, it was announced that New Yorker Lady Gaga, will be named this year's "Rising Star". Lady Gaga has been making a splash lately from being named the third artist ever in history to have three No. 1 singles on the Top 40 Airplay chart to her wild outfits she wore to the 2009 MTV VMAs.

As said in today's Billboard.biz article, Lady Gaga is "one of those rare examples of a truly unique artist with mass appeal," says Bill Werde, editorial director of Billboard. "She has established herself as one of today's top songwriters, and the whole world is waiting to see what her next outrageous but brilliant move or style will be. It is that ongoing anticipation, combined with her success that makes her a rising star."

Death Does Not Stop You From Giving Credit (From NYCityBeat, Oct. 2009)

On Monday, Michael Jackson's first posthumous single, "This Is It" was released on the airwaves. While the internet was abuzz with mixed reviews about the single, one legendary songwriter named Paul Anka was ready to sue the Jackson estate.

This was because Anka had co-written the song with Jackson back in 1983, but was given no credit when the song came out on Monday. Jackson was listed as the sole songwriter. Back in 1983, the pair had a falling out and the single was never used on a Jackson album. However, it was used as a single for a Puerto Rican singer named Sa-Fire in 1991, being renamed as "I Never Heard".

Anka was given credit after his threat to sue and was given 50 percent of the copyright, making it a potentially a very good payday for the 68-year-old Canadian songwriter. This also will be a great loss in the Jackson estate.

You can find articles on it on Live Daily, Yahoo!, and Entertainment Weekly.

Here is a short clip of the single from YouTube. You have to go on Jackson's official site to hear the full song.

A Music Blog Moves Beyond the Screen (From NYCityBeat, Sept. 2009)

Being a regular blog reader means never being surprised by what other blogs do. You are on top of all of the happenings of the blog and you know what the blog is about. So it was a pleasant surprise to find out that the Brooklyn Vegan, a popular Brooklyn music blog, does showcases!

Being a sometimes reader, this blogger never thought about music blogs moving beyond the computer screen. However, it does make sense. Music bloggers are suppose to be talking about what is happening in music and making their readers aware of the hidden gems that they discover. Instead of just writing about it, the Brooklyn Vegan has taking it one step further and decided to give a showcase with CMJ, (College Music Journal). Turns out, this is something that has been happening for the past few years.

This year's showcase takes place at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 6 p.m. You can read more about it at the Brooklyn Vegan and get tickets here.

Here is a video found on YouTube of a band that played at the Brooklyn Vegan Showcase at CMJ 2006.
