If you don't know who Aja Monet is, here is a great introduction to who this Brooklyn poet is. An amazing poet and musician, she is universal, yet always personal in every project she touches. Glitch, with Sleepin Giant, is visually appealing, in addition to being thoughtful, real, and smooth. I also wanted to add this additional gem from her SoundCloud that I am obsessed with. Completely blew me away and made me want to throw my pens and notebooks out the window. Absolutely amazing and tells a story that anyone in this kind of love can relate to word to word. Plus her word play twists your mind into knots and then makes you explode. Hello my Write Queen Readers, I wanted to let you guys know about a wonderful seminar that my friend Leeia Music is hosting next week Thursday. If you are in music, this is a must-go-to event that not talks about an opportunity only a few people have thought about, but is also affordable for its invaluable information: There are many income-generating aspects to the music business – from radio spins, to merchandising, to live touring, to album sales – but one of the most overlooked facet is that of placements. Think of how many times your favorite song has helped you tune into an otherwise forgettable commercial, set the tone in a television show, or acted as a marketing tool for a new movie? The idea of placements is nothing new, but its execution is still a mystery to many.
Marketing Your Music is a live seminar to be held on Thursday, July 21st, 2011 at the Gibson Baldwin Showroom (formerly the legendary Hit Factory) 6pm EST, focused on aiding up-and-coming & independent artists, songwriters, composers, and producers in their quest for music placements in film, television, Internet, and other media. Presenters Include: David Hnatiuk and David Weiss, co-authors of the industry-leading book, Music Supervision: Selecting Music for Movies, TV, Games and New Media. They are also co-founders of the music supervision service www.thesonghunters.com. David Hnatiuk (www.autonatic.net)
Live Performances by recording artists Andy Rosen and Kiriaki Bozas! Who will be in Attendance: Musicians, Film Producers, Composers, Record Label Reps, Music Lawyers, Producers, Recording Artist, and Songwriters. SPACE IS VERY LIMITED, BOOK NOW! Tickets to this seminar cost $40.00. Registered attendees are encouraged to share their comment and promote themselves on event website. Please include link to song sample and bio. A few registered attendees will be selected to perform at event. Others will have their music played. You can register and buy your ticket at Event Brite: Registration: http://musicseminarsny072111.eventbrite.com/ Remember to check out Music Seminars Website: http://musicseminarsny.webs.com/ Now I know many of you can relate to being overwork and underpaid. No one likes it. Except maybe in this video by J.Scar featuring Kemba Lodescar. This is J.Scar's first music video. Other than being catchy, I was impressed by the quality of the video for it being his first. He must have a great team behind him. Hope to see more very soon!
When I was looking for a picture of Marsha Ambrosius' album, I came across an ad to see The Floacist's new video "Let Me" on the Singersroom.com. The word controversial got my attention. So I clicked on the ad and saw this gem! She is topless with her nipples covered up. It's a very seductive and artistic video. After I finished watching it, I started to read the comments on YouTube. Most were compliments, but others were negative comments on her breasts. Some called her breasts saggy!
Wow...when I read that, I was appalled. What woman with natural breasts doesn't have sag? Are we so use to seeing the girls in bras that when they are out and dancing in front of us (and a possible lover) that they become repulsive? The Floacist (aka Natalie Stewart) has a beautiful body. So imagine if I did a video like this? Then the critics would really have to talk about sag. And themselves because we all got it. Even if they are perky now, they will fly down south eventually. Surprisingly both men and women were criticizing her breasts. Are our views of beauty that distorted? Wait, that is a dumb question, of course they are! I could go on and on, but I won't because this is a Write Discovery and not a Write Rant...(uh oh, I think I just created a new category!!!), so I'll say just watch the video and enjoy. And I'll end with a question that you can leave your answers to in the comment section: In arts and media, would you prefer to see a natural body or a made up one? Should more artists go for the natural look in music videos like in this one? As I try to wind down for the night and surf Facebook, I saw on my live stream a status from Marsha Ambrosius. Apparently BOSSIP is previewing her album. You have to go and listen. This album is awesome. Can't wait for it to come out next Tuesday. My favs are With You, Far Away, Your Hands, I Want You to Stay, and Chasing Clouds. Hmm that sounds like a poem:
With you so far away, I want your hands. I want you to stay, chasing clouds of our late nights and early mornings. Please don't ever leave... us hanging for so long without music from you Marsha! Continue to make angels sing! Can't wait to own this album! Check it out! Now it's time for all good writers to go to sleep so they can get up early in the morning and write a real blog post! Good night! Hey folks! If you are in New York, hope you are enjoying the snow. It wasn't as bad as the blizzard two weeks ago, but here we go again with more piles of snow. At least Bloomberg did a better job in clearing up the roads this time. But the snow means a lazy day in bed with my computer and boy did I get a treat in my inbox! Before I get into that, I have to make a note of a change on the blog. I've added a new category called "The Write Discoveries" featuring music, books, and other miscellaneous things that I have discovered on the net and beyond. With that being said, let me introduce this absolutely amazing artist who I discovered today. Earlier this afternoon, I got an e-mail from a stunning Puerto Rican House music artist named Mystina from Crown Heights. She wanted me to check out her video and let my readers know about her music. I didn't know what to expect. I've encountered artists where they have claimed that I will like their music and sometimes...I was truamatized to say the least. So I was kind of scared when I got this e-mail. I pressed play and...well, I have watched the video five times and listened to just the song eight times already! I absolutely love it!!! With Mystina, I feel like I am a kid in the 90's again, listening to KTU while driving around with my dad. It feels familar yet it's so new and refreshing. Even the video, done by Scrapping the Tin Man Productions, is reminiscent of a video from the 90's, which I love. Earlier today I was having a conversation with my boyfriend about music and I told him how the sound of the 90's and early 2000's probably won't come back into music until about another 20 to 40 years, just like some sounds from the 60's and 70's didn't make a comeback until the recent years (a trend I hate because some artists will make a whole album sounded like 1970...NO!). But I disgress. It looks like I am wrong. Mystina, dubbed "The Darling of House Music", sounds like the 90's at its best. I adore house music so my ears are happy right now. To make this long story short, Mystina's video "The Coin" is the 90's reincarnated. It's familar, but fresh. The video has such an indie feel to it and the ending was definitely a surprise. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did. Check it out! You can check out Mystina at:

There are some songs that probably have 50 or more plays (or will be arriving there very soon) by now. These artists aren't mainstream cookie cutters that you can find on the radio. But these are artists that should be on the radio to redefine what music is about. Four out of five of these artists are poets, one is a super singer looking to start a genre of her own. This is how our lesson in great music is going to go folks. First will come a picture of their release which will link to a page where you can download and/or purchase their work. Underneath will be links to their website and/or Facebook Page. Below that will be a one line review of their work. Got it? Good! Let discovery begin! Review: Best thing I've had delivered to my house all year. A man with lyrical sense. Better than hip-hop, fantastic poetry. URBAN ALTERNATIVE STAR, “LEEIA” TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM “UPS & DOWNS” ON JULY 26, 2010
ALBUM RELEASE PARTY TO BE HELD AT CRASH MANSION (NYC), HOSTED BY AMANDA DIVA July 12, 2010 –New York, NY New York‐based urban alternative artist Leeia is set to release her debut album, “Ups & Downs”, on July 26, 2010. A rhythmic fusion of pop, R&B, and reggae, Leeia’s music brings a whole new sound to the world’s capital; while her live show provides an energetic funk that will soon light up arenas worldwide. Born and raised in the Big Apple, Leeia’s first big break came when she won two contests (“Reggae’s Rising Star” and “Talent Jam”, respectively) on New York’s 93.5. “The reggae community is more supportive in New York than a lot of other genres, and they showed a lot of love,” she recalls. With her momentum mounting, a few radio spins further added to Leeia’s movement, and before long, she was performing alongside such seminal artists as Beenie Man, Sean Paul, and reggae legend Freddie McGregor. Originally completed in January, "Ups & Downs" is a culmination of a lifelong flirtation with music, and the title reflects all of the obstacles and blessings involved in the making of the album. A computer crash forced Leeia to re‐record her entire album. Undeterred, Leeia completed the process with an open heart and mind –so when an unforeseen mis‐cue over a track with a major reggae artist didn’t go according to plan, Leeia’s album didn’t suffer. Instead, in a testament to Leeia’s patience and persistence, the album came back stronger than ever. Leeia says of the album’s concept: “Since I have so many genres, I created a storyline to keep it all together. This is a great stepping‐stone –I’m at a point now, where I get it. This is how life is supposed to go, and it’s reflected in the storyline.” In accordance with promotion of the album, Leeia will bring her jam‐packed live show in for an intimate showcase held on July 26, 2010 at New York City’s famed Crash Mansion. Hosted by Amanda Diva, the album release party will feature a dynamic performance by Leeia, who says of the show: “I’ve got a 2‐piece acoustic, and a 4‐piece; I’m a fan of live instrumentation. I’m going to give you a live, energetic performance. And my dancers will make you sweat!” The hometown show marks the first in a mini‐tour dedicated to promoting "Ups & Downs". Leeia’s packed summer includes shows in Boston, Nevada, and Antigua (at the inaugural Ocean Breeze Music Festival). Leeia’s excitement is insurmountable: “Singing live, in person, is sooo much better than singing in the studio! I want to learn instruments – keys, guitar – I want to play it all by myself. I want to stretch my vocal range, I want to improve my business relationships.” Having already made a small appearence in a Jay‐Z video “ I Know”, VH1 “The Salt n Pepa Show”, and an upcoming film “Beware the Gonzo”, Leeia’ frenetic pace is a sight to behold. Rarely do you have such a versatile artist, mash up so many different genres, while also maintaining an air of individuality. In an ode to entertainers past, Leeia is dancehall, pop, and R&B –in one. I was sitting around, listening to my iPod when I heard a song I haven't heard in a long time: Back to Life by Soul II Soul. It's from the album Keep on Movin'. This was my first CD I had ever gotten. My dad gave it to me after I found it among his things. For a few months, it was all I listened to and absorbed into my skin. Though I haven't heard it in a long time, I still remember some of the songs very well. I love the title track.
So I am curious readers...what was your first CD/tape/record etc.? It doesn't matter if it was given to you or if you bought it yourself. How did your first album end up in your hands? By the way, welcome to the first official post of Songkiss'd. You can either leave a comment or send an e-mail to [email protected] with your response. If you are a member of the Songkiss'd blog on MySpace, send a message or send a tweet @music_views on Twitter. Either way, let's dive in because Songkiss'd has been waiting too long to emerge. Let's explore the kiss of music! |
